The 52nd session of the UN Statistical Commission will take place from 1-3 and 5 March 2021 in a virtual format. All official documents are available on the Commission’s website. Many of the background documents are also available on the website already.

On 19 January 2021, the Bureau of the Commission held a preparatory meeting, in which they discussed the modalities of the Commission session and reviewed the list of virtual side events to be held. The full list of side events is available on the Commission’s website.

Side events commenced on 20 January 2021 when the director of UNSD held the first of two Global Chats on the preparations of the virtual session. In the Global Chat, the director updated participants on the virtual nature of the meetings, and the impact the time constraints will have on the usually robust discussions. He explained that through written statements delegations are invited to share their statements on the agenda items prior to the Commission session. The written statements provide an alternative to the usual in-person deliberations and will be reviewed and summarized by UNSD as substantive secretariat.

To help orientate delegations, the timeline for preparations leading up to the Commission was also shared. Materials on the Global Chat including the recording of the event are available on the website

Two high-level events tailored for chief statisticians who usually attend the commission are being planned for 10 and 24 February, focusing on data stewardship and the statistical systems’ response to Covid-19, respectively.
