Context/Background
In April 2018, Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) released the first set of the Physical Supply and Use Tables for Energy on a pilot basis. These accounts are a first of their kind for Kenya and were produced in partnership with multi-agency stakeholders in Kenya and support from the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD).
Kenya was one of two countries (along with Uganda) participating in this international project in 2017, which aimed to advance the global knowledge in SEEA compilation. The project was led by KNBS with support from national stakeholders who agreed on SEEA priority accounts in a draft National Plan for SEEA compilation in Kenya. In continuation, KNBS and UNSD have started a new project in 2022 under which the national plan will be updated and published, the energy accounts extended to include asset accounts and the physical flow accounts improved to be able to respond to the global data collection exercise, and a new water account will be compiled and disseminated.
Kenya has also partnered with IUCN and UNSD in production of Ecosystem accounts using the ARIES for SEEA platform and UNEP in the Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB) project in Kenya.
Objective
This webinar aims to share information and reflection on the process and institutions involved in compiling SEEA accounts by the Kenyan Government. This includes both the Central Framework and Ecosystem Accounts, and various partners; the approach to continuously compiling Energy accounts and user experience in Kenya; UNEP experience in implementing The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB) project in Kenya and key findings as well as the IUCN and UNSD experience in compiling Ecosystem Accounts in Kenya using the ARIES for SEEA approach.
The way forward for NCA in Kenya will also be discussed. In so doing, we hope to inspire further discussion on differences and synergies with the experience of other African countries.
