Workstreams

The Regional Hub for Africa will undertake various activities that are organized into four distinct workstreams or pillars. These workstreams have been designed to ensure that the activities of the Regional Hub are aligned with its overarching objectives and are implemented in a coordinated and effective manner. By organizing its activities in this manner, the Regional Hub aims to optimize its impact and contribute to the development of data-driven insights that can support decision-making and drive development outcomes across the African continent.

Advocacy/Leadership

Capacity Building

The Regional Hub for Africa plays a vital role as a champion and advocate for the effective utilization of big data and data science techniques across the region. The Hub actively promotes the use of these techniques by sharing their benefits and demonstrating their practical applications through use cases. This, in turn, supports data science activities within the broader National Statistics System, thereby enabling the region to harness the full potential of data-driven insights.

The Regional Hub for Africa builds capabilities and provides training opportunities for statisticians and data scientists from national, regional, and global statistical offices. It works closely with the UN Task Team on training, competencies, and capacity development to meet the needs of African member states. The Hub coordinates and/or provides various training activities on data science for the modernization of official statistics. By providing these opportunities, the Regional Hub aims to enhance the skills of statisticians and data scientists in the region, enabling them to leverage data-driven insights to drive development outcomes.

Research

UN Global Platform

The Hub has a critical research role in advancing the use of big data, alternative data sources, and data science techniques for the development of new statistical methods and techniques. The Hub's research activities will focus on exploring new data sources, building prototypes, and providing use cases that can be disseminated for wider use. In the initial stages of establishing the Regional Hub, research efforts will concentrate on delivering smaller projects that aim to build coding skills, enhance confidence, and increase impact. By leveraging these research efforts, the Regional Hub for Africa is well-positioned to drive innovation and foster data-driven insights that can help to advance the region's development goals.

The United Nations Global Platform (UNGP)  provides a collaborative environment and platforms for the Regional Hub for Africa, serving as a critical tool for enabling collaboration projects, knowledge exchange on newly developed methods, algorithms, and tools, and providing training opportunities in partnership with the African regional hub. The Regional Hub for Africa leverages the platform to promote data-driven insights and facilitate the sharing of best practices across the region. By providing a centralized platform for collaboration and knowledge sharing, the Regional Hub for Africa is well-positioned to drive innovation and foster data-driven insights that can help to advance the region's development goals.
