Date: Wednesday, 24 April 202

Venue: UNECA, Addis Ababa- Ethiopia

The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa in collaboration with partners and data stakeholders organized a Plenary round-table panel on the transformation and modernization of statistical systems at the Africa Regional Forum on Sustainable Development ARFSD10. The objectives of the round-table panel were:

  1. To highlight trends in terms of needs for, and generation, management and use of data and statistics vis-a-vis existing statistical systems.
  2. To identify, articulate gaps and challenges encountered in current statistical systems in the region.
  3. To identify and articulate the initiatives and investments that are needed to transform and modernize statistical systems.

The round-table emphasized that high-quality data and statistics are indispensable for designing, implementing and reporting on policies and programmes at all levels to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want, of the African Union. This notwithstanding, governments and their partners continue to experience challenges in generating, managing, accessing and using high quality data in a timely manner.

Member States and their partners have therefore underlined the need to transform and modernize statistical systems. The ultimate goal is to generate, effectively manage and enable use of high-quality data and statistics to respond to the urgent need for data-driven plans to rescue SDGs, implement the second 10-year implementation plan of Agenda 2063 and deal with current and future crises.  Initiatives like the United Nations 2.0 aims to strengthen expertise in data- driven plans. Moreover, the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) has developed a roadmap for transforming statistics in Africa from 2023-2030.
